Psy 630 Seminar in Social Psychology

Miami University

General Description

This seminar will explore and critically evaluate current research and theory on a variety of topics within the field of social psychology. The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with the most recent innovations, trends, and developments represented in mainstream publication outlets, eg. Journal of Personality & Social Psychology, and Personality & Social Psychology Bulletin, so that they may better understand the context of their own interests, and develop researchable ideas that have increased potential for contributing to the field.

The format of the seminar will be loosely based on a structure suggested by Tice & Baumeister (1995). Each week we will focus on a different recent issue (i.e., within the past 12 months) of JPSP or PSPB. Discussion will concern the characteristics of the entire issue, plus more in-depth examination of specific articles of interest to individual participants.

Beside weekly readings and presentation of articles, participants will be expected to develop a "do-able" research design as a written semester project, and to submit written analyses (2-3 pages) of two articles for publication on the world wide web.

Please see me if you have any questions.

Note: It is very likely that the meeting time of the seminar will remain as published. If it does change, we will follow Departmental policy of not changing the meeting time until after our first meeting, and only if the new time is acceptable to all participants.
