Why Did Darva Conger Marry a Millionaire?: The Theory of Attribution -- February, 2000.  Analysis by Vince Beckman, Amy Gangloff, David Heineman, & Andrea Serrott.

On February 15, 2000, 23 million people tuned in to see Fox’s special "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire" in which 50 women paraded around the stage in the hopes of winning a rich husband. Many criticized the marriage and considered the bride, Darva Conger, a gold-digger without any value for the sanctity of marriage. As it turns out, the marriage was annulled shortly after the honeymoon. In interviews with People, and ABC news Conger claims that she only did the show for fun and never planned to actually marry someone she had never met. She states that friends persuaded her to do it and was terrified when she won. Other sources say that her intention was to marry the millionaire. With responses such as "I'll be your friend, your lover, and your partner," it is not hard to see why the groom, Rick Rockwell, thought she was sincere. It is hard to decide what to attribute her decision to marry a stranger to, especially since this this a such a unique situation.
